Diarrhoea situation after flood in Bangladesh

Flood water is going down but diarrhoea number is rising up. I was in a boat.... water in every where but not a single source of pure drinking water was found active, all had gone under water - no drop of water to drink. A recent news from ministry of health and family welfare stated that in last 24 hours about 1012 patients were admitted in International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) - a centre for treatment of diarrhoea in Bangladesh.

People are trying to support government to help the affected peoples. Doctors of all fields, NGO workers, Bangladesh army, professionals, government officials and student volunteers - all are working together. Volunteers are making Oral rehydration salt (ORS) to supply among the poor peoples, distributing water purifying tablets and food.

Now the situation is under control but it may go beyond the control if diarrhoeal outbreak occur. Then the help from our friend countries will be needed.

Bangladesh is a country of rivers. This is a country through which rain water from India pass to Bay of Bengal. Three large international rivers - Ganga, Brahmaputra and Jamuna passes through Bangladesh to end into the sea. When heavy rainfall occur in China, Nepal and India then the rain water enters into those rivers and come down with great streams through these rivers. Though these rivers have limitations of capacities so they usually over flowed by that water.Due to current global environmental situation, Bangladesh is one of the most sufferer. Heavy rain is associated with water from upper side aggravate the situation.

At least 30% of the population live below the poverty level, so they suffer most. All of their assets submerged under water. There is no pure drinking water to drink as most of the deep tube wells under water. Their food storage washed away with flow of water. It's like ' water water every where but not a drop to drink". They are taking impure water and inviting diseases. But Government of a poor country is trying hard to manage for a plate of food and a glass of drinking water for about one crore flood affected people. Government also have lack of wealth but trying its up most capacity.

A total of 269 people were died till 10th August from diarrhoea and flood related complications. The sources from ministry of health and family welfare stated that in last 24 hours at least 4055 patients were affected in diarrhoea in 41 districts and 818 patients were admitted in International Institute for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B). The number was 700 on Thursday. Most of them were from the areas near capital Dhaka.People are crying for food and water and the authority is running short of Oral Re hydration Saline (ORS) and water purifying tablets. Volunteers of Dhaka University are manufacturing ORS working day and night. All workers from government support team, doctors, volunteers, NGO workers and nationals of Bangladesh are working hard.

Our friends already been extended their hand of help, like Prince of England & Wales, Government of United Kingdom, USA, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, India, China, Japan and international organizations like - UNICEF, WHO, Action Aid, Islamic relief and some other local NGOs like - BRAC, ASA, Earth foundation.

People of Bangladesh have strong mental and moral strengths, they are used to fight with natural disaster. If anybody extend his hand then they always try to utilize it properly.
